Popular adventure and strategy series fire emblem recently revealed that he will be returning to the world of Fodlan, the title setting of 2019’s main series Fire Emblem: Three Houses, with a muzzle–titled style spin-off Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes will not be a direct sequel, but instead will offer an alternate path in which characters from the original game make different choices and experience different outcomes.
Originally announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation in February, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes again offers a choice of three routes, this time named Crimson Blaze, Azure Gleam, and Golden Wildfire. Each route focuses on one of three rival factions: the Adrestian Empire, led by Edelgard von Hresvelg, the Kingdom of Faerghus, led by Dimitri Alexander Blaiddyd, and the Leicester Alliance, led by Claude von Riegan. However, previous trailers for the game potentially hinted that the three factions could be working together this time around, rather than remaining enemies.
A new trailer, released on April 12, shows off new protagonist Shez, dubbed the “Mysterious Mercenary,” and reveals that former protagonist Byleth could play an antagonistic role in Three Hopes. The game’s Japanese language website has revealed more information about Shez, which the player can give by another name. They are portrayed as a lone mercenary with no friends or family, currently recovering from his humiliating defeat by Byleth, the “Ashen Demon”. Alongside Shez, another new character was revealed: Arval, a strange figure who appears in Shez’s dreams.
The game’s website gives very little information about Arval, even refusing to confirm whether she is real or simply exists in Shez’s head. Arval’s mysterious nature, ability to speak in dreams, and otherworldly outlook may connect her to the goddess Sothis, who similarly speaks to Byleth in her head and, in Three Houses, allows Byleth to use the time-bending ability Divine Pulse. Arval will likely give Shez a similar capability, as the website describes. Three Hopes’ protagonist as being miraculously able to rise again after their disastrous battle with Byleth.
Although the new trailer only features a small part of Arval, presumably to keep fans guessing about its mysterious nature, it did reveal several more. three hopes both new and returning characters. In addition to Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude, their respective vassals Hubert, Dedue, and Hilda have also been confirmed playable. Other characters appearing in the trailer, but whose playability has yet to be confirmed, included Mercedes, Lorenz, and Flayn. Monica, an antagonistic non-player character from the original Three Houses, has also apparently been promoted playable in three hopes, appearing on the battlefield alongside Edelgard and Hubert. Whether Arval will be a full-fledged playable character or simply support Shez like Sothis does for Byleth remains to be seen.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes releases on Nintendo Switch on June 24.
